Should You Repair or Replace Your Roof?

Repair or replace? That is the question that every homeowner must, at one point or another, answer when it comes to their roofs. For your home’s best performance and your peace of mind, consider what your roof needs. Your trusted roofing contractors at Wadden Construction offer these helpful hints to determine when to repair or replace your roof.

Partial Re-roofing

When the damage is only on one side of the roof, partial re-roofing is a viable option, even if the damage is significant. It is more expensive, though, on a cost per square (a 10 x 10 area) basis. There can be other problems as well. When an asphalt roof already has more than one layer, all layers should be first removed. This means increased labor and disposal costs. Otherwise, the re-roofed section will end up quite higher with a very noticeable hump.

Shingle Replacement

Replacing damaged shingles is quite easy and inexpensive. Your patches, though, may not match the rest if you don’t have spare matching shingles or if the shingles already on your roof have weathered. Still, you can probably ignore the look if it would mean another 10 or 15 years of roof life. Remember, though, that a roof with a prominent patch isn’t particularly easy on the eyes.

Full Roof Replacement

Even if you have decided on a repair, consider a new roof while the crew is on-site with tools and equipment, especially if you have an older roof or the damage is extensive. This will likely be less expensive than a repair now and then several more in a few years. This is often the best choice. In most cases, a homeowner will only need one full replacement in their lifetime.
